Abstract
The duration of the Haitian disaster has left numerous dilemmas for the affected community. Prolonged stays in transitional settlements or permanent displacement has been the only options for many. As reconstruction has progressed this increases the likelihood that many people without the means to rebuild their properties have opted for unsafe solutions in badly damaged areas.
The design addresses community needs by coordinating with international agencies in an initiative which has value to the individual homeowner, as well as infrastructure and environmental improvement. Haiti’s new legal requirements for land sales are due to have a profound effect on the market. Those who are still unable to make housing and restitution claims; or are too deeply impoverished to act for themselves are likely to stay in impermanent and unsafe conditions.
The proposed solution is to generate livelihoods opportunities, which can provide sustainable low-cost housing for vulnerable populations. Hopefully, this can be achieved through the creation of cooperative housing schemes in conjunction with domestic and international initiatives.
